Few и a few сочетаются только с исчисляемыми существительными во множественном числе: there were a few people waiting for him его ждали несколько человек; few people voted for the candidate за этого кандидата голосовало мало людей/мало кто голосовал за этого кандидата. При использовании неисчисляемых существительных значение небольшого, недостаточного количества передается прилагательным little и a little: to have very little money иметь очень мало денег, ср. to have a little money иметь немного денег.
